What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people recover from the emotional impact of traumatic or distressing experiences. EMDR works by targeting how trauma is stored in the brain and supporting the nervous system in reprocessing these memories. This process reduces their emotional intensity and helps shift them from feeling overwhelming or stuck. Using a structured and integrative approach, EMDR taps into the brain’s natural healing ability, fostering relief, clarity, and resilience.
How EMDR Therapy Works Virtually?
EMDR therapy can be effectively delivered online, offering meaningful support and healing in a virtual setting. Through secure video sessions, you and your therapist engage in EMDR’s structured approach to process distressing memories. Bilateral stimulation (BLS)—a key component of EMDR—is adapted for online use with techniques such as tapping (like the Butterfly Hug) or visually following a moving object, such as a wand or cursor, on the screen. These methods help the brain reprocess stuck or overwhelming experiences, leading to reduced emotional intensity and increased resilience over time.
I use a HIPAA-compliant remote BLStool to provide visual BLS online called bilateralsimulation.io.
