Therapy in English, Spanish, and Portuguese

Trauma-Informed Therapy in  in the Language That Feels Like Home

Language is more than words—it’s the way we make sense of our world, connect with others, and express what’s deepest inside us. As a therapist, I believe you deserve the chance to do this important work in the language that feels most natural, safe, and true for you. At Prado Counseling and Consulting, I offer trauma-informed, evidence-based counseling in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, honoring your story in the language that fits.

For many of us, the experiences that shaped us - trauma, attachment wounds, and early life experiences are stored not only in memory, but in the body and in language. Being able to speak in your first or preferred language can make a meaningful difference in how emotions are accessed, processed, and healed.

Why Multilingual and Multicultural Therapy Matters

If you’ve grown up moving between cultures or languages, you know how much emotion is tied to specific words, places, and relationships. Sometimes, talking about family, migration, or early experiences in a second language just doesn’t feel quite right. Important details can get lost, and it can take extra effort to express what you’re feeling.

Multilingual counseling allows:

  • Deeper emotional expression and clarity
  • Greater access to early memories and attachment experiences
  • Reduced cognitive and emotional effort during sessions
  • A stronger sense of safety, belonging, and trust

This is especially important in trauma therapy, where precision, pacing, and attunement are essential.

Culturally Responsive, Trauma-Informed Care

For me, therapy is about more than language—it’s about understanding the unique ways culture, family, and history shape who you are. As a migrant myself, I know firsthand what it’s like to navigate new places, languages, and cultural expectations. I was once an international student, and today I work with clients from many different backgrounds—including international students who bring with them a rich diversity of cultures, religions, and even languages I don’t speak.

These experiences have taught me how intergenerational trauma, migration, caregiving roles, and systemic stressors shape our emotional health and relationships. I approach therapy with deep respect for your journey, knowing that it takes courage to reach out and share your story.

I use evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches like EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and attachment-focused work. These methods are always adapted with care to fit your cultural background and lived experience. Together, we’ll honor your every part of your story.

Who Multilingual and Multicultural Therapy May Be Helpful For

Multilingual counseling can be especially meaningful for anyone whose story is shaped by language, migration, or cultural diversity. As someone who has experienced migration myself, and who works closely with international students and clients from many backgrounds, I understand how important it is to feel truly seen and understood.

You might find multilingual therapy supportive if you:

  • Feel more emotionally expressive in Spanish or Portuguese, or simply more yourself in your preferred language
  • Grew up in a bilingual, multicultural, or immigrant household
  • Are navigating life as an international student, or adjusting to new cultural and religious contexts
  • Notice relationship patterns influenced by family, migration, or cultural expectations
  • Are healing from trauma, PTSD, or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
  • Want therapy that honors not just your inner world, but also your cultural and linguistic identity

Many clients have shared that therapy in their own language, and with cultural sensitivity, helps them feel seen, heard, and grounded especially when their experiences cross borders, languages, and traditions.

A Relationship-Centered Approach

As with all my work, multilingual counseling is grounded in a collaborative therapeutic relationship. I meet you where you are, moving at a pace that supports safety and trust. When fear, avoidance, or protective patterns arise, we approach them with curiosity and respect rather than force.

Over time, therapy becomes a space where a more Self-led, values-aligned life can emerge—one that feels coherent, authentic, and less driven by trauma or survival-based patterns.
